THE PIONEER

Mzee Horera

Mzee Horera has been growing tea since 1971, but it wasn't until 2014, when he discovered purple tea, that everything changed.

Robert Murimi, affectionately known as Mzee Horera, has had four careers throughout his lifetime. He began as a policeman, turned corporal serving for 10 years, before transitioning to become a teacher for 23 years. After achieving the position of the head teacher, he retired and served as a director at the Ragati tea factory, where he first encountered purple tea in 2014.

Impressed by its health benefits and potential to uplift the quality of life for tea farmers, Mzee uprooted 15,000 green tea bushes, equivalent to three acres, to plant purple tea. Despite initial shock from friends, family, and neighbors, he has since encouraged nearly 90 local farmers to follow suit.

A big pioneer and advocate for purple tea in the Mount Kenya region, Mzee registered the Horera Tea company in 2016.

QUALITY

Consistent and high-quality tea through manual processing and hand-picked leaves

Hand-picked tea leaves ensure consistent quality in every batch, unlike machine-picked leaves.
Manual processing allows for consistent results and a better taste when contrasted against to automated processing methods.

The tea is sourced from the Mt. Kenya region, which is known for producing some of the best tea bushes in the world. The region’s ideal climatic conditions, including consistent temperatures, result in less variability in tea output and a consistently high level of quality.
